Need help for Egg Drop Project. Please.?

I am doing an egg drop project for Physical Science Honors. My teacher expects a lot out of the honors class and I am not that creative. I am a freshman and need help. The egg has to be raw and is going to be dropped from a press box at the football field onto marine plywood. There are six guidelines that I will list.

1. Must use a raw Grade A Large White Egg.

2. Container may be not larger than a shoe box.

3. The egg CANNOT break when dropped.

4. Name and instructions must be on the container.

5. Parachutes, wings, etc. are allowed but are not mandatory.

6. All containers need to be able to be opened to see if the egg is cracked.

Judging is based on the fastest to the target, the accuracy to the target, and the survival of the egg. Creativity also counts a lot for the grade, especially if there is a tie.

Thank you so much. And I hope someone comes up with something I can work with.

Need help for Egg Drop Project. Please.?
Bubble-wrap the egg, and put a layer of bubble-wrap in the box.
Reply:When I did an egg drop project, I had alot more rules and guidelines. But heres some of the things I did:

Put as much cotton, tissue, and paper bags around the egg as possible and/or string long pieces of yarn from one wall of the box to another (think of as a hammock) so that the egg can rest upon a "bed" of yarn. THis will keep the egg completely disconnected from the bottom of the box and therefore feel less of the impact.

Also to lessen the impact, I put bent pipe cleaners on the bottom of my box (I bent them into a "Z" shape. They will work as shock absorbers.

A parachute is a good idea and the bigger, the better. I would recommend a trash bag. Just be sure to tape two big sticks in an "X" shape on the inside of the bag to keep the bag open.

I hope some of these help. Email me if you need clarification or have questions! Good Luck.
Reply:We have the same exercise in our leadership seminar and the material is a straw. I mean the straw used in drinking softdrinks, the colored one. It's basically the same thing, its just that the thicker the straw is the safer the egg will be. This is the trick:

Form a triangle out of a single straw. Make as many as possible. Then stack this triangle shaped straw in a way that the egg will touch the three sides of the triangle. Do the same on the other sides. Probably 3-4 triangles of 4-6 stacks of straw will do the trick.

for more info about it...just email me at johnp23oasis@yahoo.com...Ciao and good luck on your project...
Reply:My suggestion is, use parachutes and a lot and a lot of mail packaging things (forgot what they are called).

Another way is, incase the box with something that will wrap the egg all around (clay, maybe) and fill it all around, making sure it fills the entire box. Preferably a small box? Applying pressure from all direction will make it NOT break.
Reply:my advice is: get a burgerbox from mcdonalds or kfc. fill it with foamrubber or cotton, and place the egg in it.

fasten the burger box with 8 elastic bands, into a cube shaped box or frame. the elastic will obsorb the shock of impact, allow the egg to move freely, without hitting anything.,

you will not even need a parashute.
